Welcome, Daniela!

As we begin a new semester at Greenhouse Studios, we asked both new and returning students to share a bit about themselves, their summer experiences, upcoming goals at GS, and broader career aspirations. These responses are from Daniela Domínguez Tavares, one of our new CLAS Graduate Research Assistants.

What do you hope to accomplish in your time at UConn over the next academic year (including both coursework and extracurriculars)?

¡Hola! My name is Daniela Domínguez, third-year Ph.D. at the history department. My research explores the ways in which Mexican politicians, diplomats, and technicians used maps, posters, tourist pamphlets, and other forms of print media with the purpose of showing Mexico as a “modern nation” in other words, a petrostate. On the other hand, this is a fascinating year for me. By October I am hoping to present my qualifying exams at the History Department and at some point, during the Spring semester present my prospectus.

What do you hope to get out of your time at Greenhouse Studios during your tenure? This can be skills and experiences that you hope to gain, types of projects you would like to work on, and contributions that you would like to make.

In this crucial moment of my Ph.D. journey, I am more curious about the possibilities that digital humanities can have for my research and scholarship. Since my research engages with extractivism and the environment, I am interested in the ways I can share this historical knowledge with a non-academic public. Why not, for instance, utilize the power of digital humanities to rethink our relationship with the environment?

I hope my skills in research and historical data will be useful for different projects.

What do you want to be “when you grow up?” Put another way, what do you see your trajectory being after graduation? Would that trajectory be the same or different if you had no constraints and unlimited resources? (In this context, “constraints” and “resources” include skill sets and expertise.)

What questions and curiosities do you have on your mind?

So many right now, professionally I am studying the history of oil and personally starting a new family, so this combination has me thinking about a thousand things about the future. So, for those two questions, I will use the “I don’t know.”

What is the path that led you to Greenhouse Studios?

What happened was that a couple of my colleagues from the History department had already worked at Greenhouse Studios, and when I moved from El Instituto to the History Department to begin my PhD, I became fully aware of the work that is done here (Constance and Luisa told me about some projects!), but what ended up convincing me that the work done here was also for me was when I was able to take a class with Fiona Vernal and thus learned about the Hartford Bound Project!

Are there any interests, hobbies, fun facts, or anything else that you would like to share about yourself?

I love outdoor activities, hiking, kayaking, and snowboarding. I grew up in Mexico, in a very dry desertic city, so snowboarding has been amazing. I just wish winter was just one month long! I am shy but once I feel confident about the environment I can talk for hours, just letting you know in case we are working at the same hours!
